Can you tell us how about your job and what you do from day to day?

I am currently in an acting Band 5 Assistant Admin Sector Manager role within the Family and Child Care Programme, Children’s Community Service. I would assist with the management, development and operational delivery of admin services within Social Services, such as Fostering, Transition and Leaving Care, Intensive Support, Family Support and Looked After Children across a number of sites. As a Band 5 admin manager my role would cover service delivery, quality, development and innovation, collaborative working, communication and information management, finance and resource management, people management and development.

Every day is varied and interesting. As a Band 5 you are responsible for your own diary management so you would try to plan your diary in advance visiting different sites and meeting with admin and professional staff.

How long have you been in your current role?

I have been acting up in this current role for approximately one year. I have 16 years experience in my substantive Band 4 General Administrative Assistant role. Overall I have 27 years experience of working within the Programme.

What experience/education is required in order to perform this role?

Hold a 3rd level qualification in a business/management/administrative related field AND one year’s administrative supervisory experience at Band 4 or Have five years relevant administrative experience, including two years supervisory experience at Band AND Have excellent people management skills and show an ability to lead and take responsibility for the performance of a large team of administrative staff.

What is the biggest challenge in your role?

Time management – trying to fit in as much as possible. I may have my workload planned and then have to re-prioritise.

What advice would you give to others looking for a job in your field?

Being able to work effectively as part of a team and working well together with both admin and professional staff. I feel it is important to be able to adapt to change and be prepared to embrace different ways of working. Be prepared to work hard - providing a high standard of care within our services is one of our key objectives.

What do you like best about your role and working in HSC?

I love working within the Family and Child Care Programme and I am very proud of all our admin and professional staff who provide such a high quality standard of care to our service users. Working as a part of a team and working across different sites and meeting with the staff. I feel overall the HSC is a good place to work. Development of staff is important to the Trust and there is quite a lot of training and development available for staff. Personally, the Trust has supported me with ILM Leadership and Management Courses Level 3 and 5.
