Within this Service, and specifically in Genomics, you will work either as a Clinical Scientist or a Genetic Technologist. In these roles you will bring specialised knowledge and skills involved in the selection of appropriate tests, the processing of patient samples and analysis/interpretation of diagnostic results.

Band 5 Genetic Technologist
Band 5 Genetic Technologists (GT) provide both technical and administrative support to maintain an efficient and high quality Molecular Diagnostics Service. Band 5 GTs spend most of the day in the laboratory doing the “wet work” and are responsible for setting up a range of diagnostic tests, undertake basic analysis and input of test results into Laboratory Information Management Systems. They will also participate in a range of Quality tasks including internal audit, document review, equipment maintenance and verification of new equipment under supervision of senior GTs/ CS.

Band 6 Genetic Technologist
Band 6 Senior Genetic Technologists are responsible for delivery of a designated proportion of the technical service, requiring significant technical expertise and ability to troubleshoot and apply specialised knowledge/skills. They are involved in validating new tests and specialised equipment for implementation into service (eg NGS, Arrays, IHC) and participating in a range of quality activities. Band 6 GTs are involved in teaching and training activities and provide supervision and support for junior staff to ensure competency in their ability to perform the range of delegated duties required for maximum efficiency. The post requires excellent organisational skills and communication skills and ability to liaise with a range of laboratory staff.
