Nurse and Patient in Treatment Room
A nursing career in prison – making a difference every day

Taking the next step in your nursing career? Why not consider healthcare in prison

We can offer you a supportive, diverse and safe working environment where you can positively impact those in your care. The South Eastern Trust has opportunities now for Band 5 and 6 Nurses in Adult, Mental Health and Learning Disability. Working within a close team of healthcare professionals, you will have the opportunity to develop and progress your career, knowing your role is making a difference every day.

What some of our staff say:

Primary Care Nurse Band 5, Karen

‘A lot of people ask me, why would you choose to work as a nurse in a prison healthcare? Well I guess it’s simple really…prison healthcare is a place where you can really make a difference to those in your care. Often the lifestyles of those in our care place them at risk of poor mental and physical health. Many patients have had little or no contact with health services before entering prison. Mental illness, drug dependence and communicable diseases are some of the key health problems - so health promotion plays a massive part. No day looks the same. Emergency response, clinics, clinical addictions, triaging…In a nutshell prison healthcare is a place where I can utilise all of my nursing skills and have autonomy, whilst maintaining holistic practice and interlinking care with other healthcare professionals.

Prison healthcare is a friendly, close knit team and management are approachable and always there to listen to any concerns. As a young nurse I feel supported within this environment’.

Primary Care Nurse Band 5, Topsy

‘I have been working for 12yrs as Primary Care Nurse. I really enjoy my role. Every day is different as we treat patients with different health care issues. We care for them as individuals to help them gain back their hope and make them feel valued so that they can see the positivity of life. We work together as a team, supporting each other to provide quality care to our patients. We also get good support from our managers and have some fun along the way. I feel honoured to be part of this awesome dedicated team’.

Mental Health Nurse Band 6, Rhonda

‘I have worked in Prison Healthcare for almost 20yrs as a Mental Health Nurse. Prior to this I worked in an acute ward and day hospital for 10yrs. I applied to Prison Health as I felt there was so much that I could offer to patients in our care who often are the most stigmatized in society. I love the challenges and the variety, no 2 days are the same. I have learned so many new skills from working with a variety of diverse stakeholders but also from the patients. These skills have enabled me to grow into an extremely adaptable, confident nurse. I consider the team I work with as 2nd family. I have a job that I love. I feel I make a positive difference in patients’ lives and ultimately in the wider community’.
