Across Northern Ireland, the vast majority of Children’s residential services are provided by the Health and Social Care Trusts.

In the Belfast Trust, there is a diverse range of Homes for young people, each with different role and function outlined in the individual Statements of Purpose, which underpins the function of each of the homes. The Belfast Trust has 9 homes offering care and protection to the most vulnerable of young people with whom we work with. The homes include:

  • 1 short term assessment home
  • 1 Regional Home for Unaccompanied Minors
  • 1 home for younger children (age 8-13)
  • 1 single occupancy specialist home and 5 medium to long term homes

The ethos of the service is underpinned by trauma informed care with all staff trained in the NI Framework of Integrated Therapeutic Care and Therapeutic Crisis Intervention.

Our Roles

The below roles available are full time and are part of a rota shift working pattern, covering days, evenings, weekends, nights and sleep in duties.

Residential Child Care Worker

(Predominantly waking night responsibilities) The role of a Residential Child Care Worker is to work as a team member in the running of the home. The role is predominantly waking night duties/ responsibilities. There may be occasions when sleep in and/ or day cover is required as part of the duties and/ or for training purposes. The role is to promote the welfare and safety of the young people from a trauma informed perspective based on their needs, Individual Crisis Support Plan, safety plan and care plan. Ensuring high levels of supervision and support to young people throughout the night will be central to the role. The role requires excellent teamwork, and partnership working with young people, families, colleagues and other agencies.

Residential Child Care / Support Worker

In this role you will be part of a shift pattern working evenings, weekends and sleep in duties. The role is to work within a team to promote the welfare and safety of the children/ young people from a trauma informed perspective based on their needs, individual Crisis Support Plan, safety plan and care plan. The profile of many children and young people in residential care have experienced multiple adverse experiences in childhood, and can present with difficulties, including increased levels of anxiety, poor emotional self-regulation, impulsivity, hyper vigilance, interpersonal and relationship difficulties, and associated behavioural difficulties, for example, self-harm, substance misuse and violence.

Our Services

All the Homes are supported by a Residential Support and Engagement team. This service is involved with the care planning and personal goal setting for the children and young people and will work closely with the key workers in maximising positive outcomes. All Homes are also supported by the Therapeutic Support Service, which involves consultations to discuss young people and reflective practice for staff. As part of the Residential Childcare Service community, you will provide a specialist service and undertake training in addition to the mandatory training requirements.
