Robbie Simpson

Procurement Assistant (Placement Student) @ Business Services Organisation

Robbie Simpson - BSO - Pals

Robbie is a Procurement Assistant and is currently a placement student in BSO PALS.

Can you tell us about your job and what you do from day to day?

As I am a placement student and still very new to the role, I am learning a lot right now. I am learning everything from the different forms we work with to the correct procedures to follow.

This means I don’t have a consistent schedule I follow day to day. It consists of meetings, where I listen in to get a better understanding of my work. I am given work to do and I am trusted to try and complete it independently although my colleagues are right by my side and ready to give guidance if I need.

How long have you been in your current role?

I have been here for nearly 2 months. Being so new and a placement student summarises why I am being slowly exposed to independent work. I have a lot to learn in the meantime.

What experience/ education is required to perform this role?

I personally am completing a Business with marketing degree but there are a range of education levels among my colleagues from no degrees to masters.

What is the biggest challenge in your role?

My biggest challenge right now is taking everything in. Everything is new to me and although it is very interesting, I need to make sure I am absorbing the information being given to me. This is to allow me to work independently in the future and put what I have learnt into practice which I am very excited for.

What advice would you give to others looking for a job in your field?

I would highly recommend my position for placement. Procurement is something that is skipped over in school and university yet it is arguably the most interesting part of a business.

All my colleagues are great fun and I would advise putting your name down for an interview. This year is the first year they have taken placement students on but you can tell they want to provide the best experience for me and learn from me how to improve it in the future years.

What do you like best about your role and working in HSC?

My favourite thing about working in HSC is the people. Everyone is great to talk to, they make the days in the office fun and they are there for you whenever you have a question. They have really helped me feel at home in the last 2 months and I hope to continue
